Waukegan Township Park Place Senior Center recently received a second year grant from the Healthcare Foundation of Northern Lake County, which provides additional opportunities to expand health resources to Waukegan Township seniors.
This grant allows Park Place Senior Center to present one-hour wellness workshops and screenings each month, focusing on all aspects of health care. Topics scheduled include glucose screenings, cancer screening including colon, lung, breast, prostate and cervical cancers; Alzheimer’s i.e., memory and other brain disorders; nutrition; heart disease; prevention of strokes; diseases of the lungs; the mind and body connection; arthritis, osteoporosis, bones and joints; and many more. Lifeline Screening, a preventative screening opportunity for stroke and heart attacks will be offered in March 2010. Medical referrals will also be available to senior citizens based on their individual need as well as income and insurance supplement coverage. The Wellness program is of vital importance in all aspects of preventative health. Park Place will provide transportation for those needing assistance in order to take part in the Wellness Workshops and screenings. The Wellness Program is offered in conjunction with the Fitness Program, which provides four Arthritis Foundation exercise classes, three strength and stamina exercise classes a week, as well as Country Line Dancing, Gentle Yoga and Tai Chi. Other health care services provided include: free blood pressure checks, free foot care, Medicare help desk, and free vision and hearing screenings.
