Trustee Ortiz is a founder of the Clean Power Lake County Campaign. This grassroots-volunteer led campaign, is working for a long-term plan for the Waukegan coal plant that includes a just transition for the workforce, the tax base, and the lakefront site. Additionally, they are working to promote clean energy projects for Waukegan and Lake County that can create new local jobs and tax revenue to build a healthy and clean energy future for Waukegan and Lake County. She has worked tirelessly with the Clean Power Lake County Campaign (CPLC) since 2013, after learning how the pollution from the Waukegan coal plant contributed to poor air quality in Waukegan. She currently serves as one of the co-chairs of CPLC and is a member of Sierra Club’s local Chapter.

Trustee Ortiz was featured in the National Geographic Channel’s Emmy Award-winning documentary series "Years of Living Dangerously." The ‘Uprising’ season finale episode, is an inspiring story of the Clean Power Lake County Campaign and Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign.

This year, Trustee Ortiz and Clean Power Lake County celebrated a groundbreaking victory with the passage of the Coal Ash Bill in Springfield. The bill requires the establishment of stronger environmental rules around coal ash ponds, which are the structures that coal plants use to store waste from their operations.

Trustee Ortiz’s passion and dedication come from believing in community involvement, helping, and speaking up for those in need. Every day, she is grateful to God for giving her faith, courage, and strength to have the opportunity to work for a healthy and clean energy future for her children, Ivan and Soleil, and future generations to come.
